Playing The Parlay — Gauging Risks And Potential Gains

Playing The Parlay — Gauging Risks And Potential Gains

Probably the most familiar type of wager in sports betting is the straight or side bet. The term “straight” is a good way to describe it—winning is determined by one basic factor and the payoff is clearly stated. If a bettor puts money on a team and they win or beat the spread, if a spread is involved, the person placing the wager collects on that one bet.

In your trips to your favorite online sportsbook, you may have noticed that you could opt to play a parlay. It may have intrigued you, but you were unsure of exactly what it entailed and what risk factors were involved.

Note that some bettors won’t go near the parlay, due to the risk factors inherent in this type of wager. With a parlay, which in England is known as an accumulator, you make a series of bets all of which you must win in order to collect. If you lose any of the wagers, you lose the entire bet.

If this sounds risky, it is. One incorrect wager means you’ve lost the entire bet. What attracts bettors to the parlay is the payoff. The standard Vegas two-bet parlay pays 2.6 to 1. Put down $100 and if your parlay comes in you realize $260. A parlay with three wagers pays 6 to 1, which translates into a $600 payoff on a $100 wager.

Let’s say you wagered on a 3-game football parlay and won $600. How much would you win on three individual bets where you put $110 on each team? You’d realize $100 per wager. Because you’re placing money on three separate teams, the straight bets cost $330, whereas a three-team parlay would involve only $100. In a best case scenario with the straight wagers, $300 will get you an additional $330. The parlay results in a $500 net on $100 wagered. That’s the benefit; you get a much better return on your money from the parlay.

The greater risk in our parlay example comes from the fact that you must win all three wagers to make any money—it is all or nothing. Here are some tips on lowering your risk if you’re new to the parlay and want to try it.

One Sport

Many online sportsbooks will offer parlay tickets that feature numerous combinations of sports. You may see a ticket with four football games, three baseball games, and three hockey games. Stay away from that type of ticket, or if you play it bet on only one sport. Why?

Although mixing sports can be attractive, it’s tough to do for the beginner. Football, baseball and hockey are all very different animals and unless you’re an expert handicapper in each, which is rare, stay with the sport you know best.

Also, you’ll see greater benefit from learning even more about football, if that’s your strong suit, than trying to figure out hockey.

Once you have some experience betting your favorite sport in a parlay situation, start testing the water of the multi-sport parlay.

Limit the Number of Teams

Wow, that six-team parlay looks so attractive with its 40 to 1 payout! Wow, that six-team parlay is so much tougher to hit than that three-team parlay that pays 6 to1! Of course a six is more unlikely to payoff—it is 40 to 1 after all.

Limit parlays to no more than three bets. This gives you a greater chance of winning (add another team and your risk goes up) while providing an attractive return. Would I like to put down $100 and get back $4,000 on a six-team parlay? Sure.

However, hitting that number of teams on one ticket is extremely difficult. Is it impossible? No, it’s not. But you have a much better chance with a three-team wager.

Other Limits

Along with combining different sports, you can often mix various types of wagers, including point spreads, win/loss, over/unders, money lines, and more. Once again, simplify your process and play your strength as a handicapper and the strength of the teams on which you’re wagering.

If you’re more adept at predicting the over/under than you are at playing the spread, go with the over/under and vice versa. Look at it logically and realistically. How many times have you been right about the over/under and the win/loss in the same game? The answer is probably not very often.

Better yet, try a few mock parlays. Scan the latest offerings and put together some parlay tickets you might bet, mixing up the types of wagers. Be sure to do this over numerous betting sequences, for football at least three weeks or with baseball, basketball or hockey a week or two of games.

Remember—it doesn’t matter in the parlay if you only lost one game, or you didn’t know a particular player would change the outcome by performing poorly or a team won on a freak play. If you were incorrect on even one wager, no matter what the circumstances, you lost that parlay.

There are no Mulligans in sports betting and parlays are especially unforgiving. Play to your strength after you’ve done your research. Hunches are normally bad bets anyway; they are anathema in the parlay.

The Strongest Selection

One way to increase your chances of winning involves betting on numerous parlay tickets and including the same strong selection on each ticket, while varying the other teams.

As an example, the Chicago Bears are playing the Arizona Cardinals at home. Chicago looks very good in this contest, an almost sure thing if there were one in the world of handicapping. You decide you’d like to play 4 separate three-team parlays at $25 each (you’re still risking $100). In this scenario, you’d include Chicago on each ticket and then a combination of different teams on each of the four.

One parlay might be Chicago over Arizona, Dallas over San Francisco and Pittsburgh over Atlanta. The next parlay would still include Chicago over Arizona, while picking the New York Giants over Philadelphia and Seattle over Oakland. The third parlay continues with Chicago over Arizona but now has New England over Buffalo and Denver over St. Louis. Your fourth ticket would be Chicago over Arizona and could include Pittsburgh over Atlanta and Seattle over Oakland—a combination of teams from two of your other parlay tickets.

TICKET 1: Chicago over Arizona, Dallas over San Francisco and Pittsburgh over Atlanta.

TICKET 2: Chicago over Arizona, the New York Giants over Philadelphia and Seattle over Oakland.

TICKET 3: Chicago over Arizona, New England over Buffalo and Denver over St. Louis.

TICKET 4: Chicago over Arizona, Pittsburgh over Atlanta and Seattle over Oakland.

Theoretically, all of these games could end in your favor. If that happened, you’d be kicking yourself because you missed a 7-team parlay that would have paid 75 to 1 or $7,500 on a one hundred dollar bet. Making each a 3-team parlay with $25 on each ticket would result in a return of $600 at the standard 6 to 1 odds if all teams won. But chances are that won’t happen.

More likely than not you may hit one or, perhaps even two of these parlays. One winning ticket would result in a total return of $125, while 2 would get you $250. Either way, you’re ahead.

The important thing to remember about playing parlays, as it is with any form of wagering, is that trying to win big by taking high risks rarely results in success. You’re looking to win 55 to 60% of your wagers, which is what most experts do over the course of time. In the world of gambling, quick, high-risk bets can be exciting and occasionally lucrative, but wagers with a bit more certainty that are spread out tend to provide better results in the long run.

As with any form of wagering to which you’re new, be sure to do your homework, start slowly, and consider sound betting strategies when playing a parlay. You’ll still have a chance of winning more than you would with a straight bet, while staying in the game longer.

Sports Recreation: Relieve Stress and Have Fun

Sports Recreation: Relieve Stress and Have Fun

The world we live in is growing increasingly fast-paced, stressful, and filled with responsibility. Because of this, everyone needs some time to relax and have some recreation. Our modern way of life also tends to be sedentary, and the meals we eat are often not very healthy. Exercise is a very important component in renewing us. For these reasons, sports recreation activities are some of the best recreation we can choose. There are many options for hobbies to provide sports recreation. You may even want to learn some new recreational sports skills.

Courses to learn new sports recreation skills can be found online and in larger cities. You can learn and participate in team sports through the local Y and other organizations. Team sports recreation activities you might like to participate in include softball, baseball, basketball, and sometimes soccer for younger people. Another team sport you might enjoy is bowling. Regardless of your skill level you can find a bowling team to have fun with.

Individual sports recreation activities you can learn and participate in include golf, tennis, running, aerobic dance, gymnastics, and horseback riding. Don’t overlook bicycling and weight training too. Many of these sports can be learned at the local Y as well. For some of these, you’ll want to have a friend to play against or share the exerience with. Many runners, for instance, like to run with a friend. And games like tennis and handball really need cooperation for best results.

If you’d rather, you can learn about sports recreation skills online. You can find courses to teach almost any sport or activity you can think of including underwater hockey, fly-fishing, and para-gliding in the Alps! Of course, unless you can get some hands-on experience you’ll only have the theories of the sport. Still, online courses are a good way to get a taste of different sports and recreational activities you might someday want to try out.

A really fun sports recreation game you might get a chance to play is ping pong. Ping pong, or table tennis as it is sometimes called, is played on a table with rubber coated paddles and extremely lightweight plastic balls. You must hit the ball with your paddle so that it strikes the table and clears the net before your opponent strikes it and bounces it back to you. One way to become more adept at ping pong and increase your chance of winning is to sometimes hit the ball harder than at other times. This keeps your opponent guessing what you will do next.

Sports recreation activities are a great way to get exercise and relieve stress. They are also a lot of fun. Whether with friends or alone, everyone needs a favorite sports recreation to take part in.

Protect Your Children’s Teeth

Protect Your Children’s Teeth

As a parent you have many responsibilities. You are responsible for providing your children with an education, food, shelter, clothing and making sure that they remain safe. The list of your duties goes on and on. With all that you have to do, you may not be able to pay enough attention to protecting your child’s teeth. It is however an extremely important duty. Protecting your child’s teeth now will help them for the rest of their life and could save you thousands of dollars in future dental bills. Here are a few tips to help you maintain your child’s dental health.

Set Up Regular Doctors Visits

The most important thing to do is to set up regular doctors visits. Once your child reaches the age of one, you should see to it that they visit the dentist every six months. By doing so, you will catch problems early before they become more painful and more expensive.

Establish Good Oral Hygiene

Establish good dental habits early with your child. Teach them to brush their teeth at least twice a day. Make sure that they also floss at least once per day. If you establish an oral hygiene routine early in life, chances are that they will stick with it forever.

Protect Their Teeth From Injury

You can not prevent every injury, accidents do happen. You can however prevent some injuries. If your children play sports, have them wear a mouth guard. Mouth Guards prevent thousands of oral injuries every year but could prevent thousands more. They should be worn in all physical sports, not just football or hockey. They can be injured just as easily in soccer, baseball, basketball and just about every other sports involving physical contact.

Stop Bad Habits

Thumb and pacifier sucking should be stopped as soon as possible. After the age of 2 pacifier sucking can have a great negative impact on how their teeth come in.

Establish A Healthy Diet

Limit how much sugar your child eats. Sodas and candy will eat away at your child’s teeth. Get them in the habit early of not overindulging in sugary snacks.

These are just a few simple things that you can do to assure that your child has good dental health. Your children may not want to do all of them but one day they will thank you for making them.

A Ball, Some Friends, and a Soccer Goal

A Ball, Some Friends, and a Soccer Goal

If Pele, Maridona, and Beckham don’t sound at all familiar to you, or if you think Freddy Adou is a guy you may have gone to high school with, keep reading… please. This article covers all the equipment and skills you’ll need to join the rest of the world in playing the wonderful game of soccer.
Actually, the rest of the world plays football – they call the sport that Steve Young used to play American football. The term ‘soccer’ came into being in the later part of the 19th century when people began abbreviating the French variation of ‘association football’ to soccer. Whatever name you use (I’ll call it soccer for the purposes of this article), it refers to the fast-paced, exciting game that has captured the interest of more and more Americans in recent years. If you’ve found that you’ve been left behind when it comes to the sport, here’s a few equipment tips and skills you’ll need to have to start playing.
As the name ‘football’ suggests, you’ll need a ball. Soccer balls come in many different sizes, materials, and styles; and league specifications vary depending on the age and level of the players. If you just want to buy a ‘normal’ ball, double check with the store clerks to make sure you’ve chosen the right one; or if you’re buying online, you can check the ball size against the standards found at www.fifa.com. The best material for your ball depends on the type of surface you’re going to play on. If you’ll spend any time at all kicking the ball around on the street or playground, I would shy away from buying a nice leather ball – the asphalt will tear it up. Synthetic materials will usually hold up better on those surfaces, and typically cost less.
Once you’ve got your ball, you’re going to need at least one pair of feet; however, if you want to do more than just kick the ball against your garage you’re going to need at least two sets. There are a number of different techniques when it comes to kicking the soccer ball – I’ll just summarize them all by saying that the goal of kicking the ball is to hit it with some part of you’re foot and make it go in the direction you want it to. In fact, in soccer matches you may use any part of you’re body to move the ball except your hands and arms. If you grew up playing catch in the back yard, the first couple of times you try to kick the ball you’ll probably look even more awkward than you feel, and it’s very likely your kids are going to laugh at you. Practice makes near perfect, and you’ll get better over time. Kicking the ball back and forth between two or more people helps. Once you feel like you might be able to kick the ball and jog/run at the same time, you’re ready to graduate to playing a game.
Goals (pronounced ‘gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooal!!!’ in actual soccer matches) in soccer are scored by kicking the ball through a rectangle shape appropriately called the goal. Though the rectangle is standard, goals can be made by placing any two objects a few steps apart. I have personally played in neighborhood games where the goal posts were chairs, barrels, younger siblings, and shoes (if you’re playing barefoot, make sure no one is wearing cleats). Kicking the ball below head height and more or less between the makeshift goal posts constitutes a goal, though you will find each goal will be heavily debated.
Competitive leagues almost always require shin guards, and you can usually pick up a decent pair for pretty cheap. Even in a friendly park setting, players can get pretty passionate, and it wouldn’t be a bad idea to wear them during the game.
The rules are simple and easy to learn. The basics you need to know are that you should try to avoid kicking people, you can’t tackle people like in American football, and you can’t use your hands. In that sense, except for the hands restriction, soccer is a lot like life. Other rules apply more in competition, but it wouldn’t hurt to read up on them at www.fifa.com.
As with any sport, the most important thing is to look good, so go out and buy yourself some silky soccer shorts and jerseys. Long hair and an Italian accent certainly won’t hurt your chances of going pro – but if neither of those is an option for you, just remember to have fun and play fair.

Difference Makers In The Playoffs: Key Positions

Difference Makers In The Playoffs: Key Positions

In baseball, hockey, football, and basketball, there are key positions that tend to be the dealmaker or breaker when the game is on the line. This doesn’t negate the fact that the four sports are true team efforts, with each position and player being important. Still, there are certain positions that more times than not are central in controlling the game when everything is at stake.

If you’re into wagering, understanding the importance of these positions in each game will give you an edge when analyzing teams or performing head to head evaluations. In this article, we’re going to focus on two positions from each sport, considering why they’re so important when it comes to big game performance.

BASKETBALL:

In basketball the central positions are point guard and center. Both call for very different players in terms of skills and physical make-up. Fans also perceive them differently, with the center drawing the most focus and the point guard often being overlooked.

Although point guards shoot the ball, it’s not their primary responsibility. Point guards run the offense when the team is on the court and for this reason this player must have good basketball sense and instincts and an ability to see the entire floor.

Thinking of the point guard as being a quarterback or an on-court coach may help you understand this position. To be successful, this guard has to possess the qualities of a QB or a head basketball coach. They must be calm under pressure, be able to read defenses and improvise in a split second.

Skills must include an ability to make plays by passing, dishing off, and penetrating the defense. The point guard needs quick hands and feet as he often controls the tempo of the game. An ability to make quick, seamless transitions when going from offense to defense is essential. The point guard is the ultimate, unselfish player whose importance and contributions are often overlooked by spectators.

When one thinks, “Center,” they usually envision a tall, big and dominant player. Great centers are good ball handlers, aggressive rebounders, and tough mentally. They actually have to be a little selfish, using their powerful position to control the boards. A center should be able to hit a mid-court jump shot. On defense, it’s the player in the center position who becomes the quarterback. Defensive rebounds are essential, which means the player in this position must be able to box out, be a strong jumper, and control the ball in tight situations.

If a team features both a premiere point guard and a strong center, chances are, if the game is close, they’ll have a good chance of winning it in the end. Take a second look at one-on-one match-ups in these important positions before wagering.

BASEBALL:

In a game of ball, it really comes down to pitching. It’s true that the thrills are often when the ball is put in play or poked over the fence. The sports moment considered by many to be the greatest of all time occurred on October 21, 1972, in the 72nd World Series when Carlton Fisk hit Pat Darcy’s slider around the Green Monster foul pole in the bottom of the 12th inning. Fisk was a hero—yes. But the fact was Darcy’s arm was aching and tired. He had nothing left in him. It was as much a poor performance by Darcy as it was a clutch play by the Boston catcher.

In baseball, you’re considered to be a great hitter if in every ten at bats you get three hits. That figure alone denotes the dominant position pitching holds in a game where the hurler stands above everyone else on his mound. If a pitcher is on, even the best batsman will have a tough time hitting him.

Then there are the names we give these commanding players—the stopper and the closer. A stopper is a starting pitcher who has the reputation of being able to “stop” a team’s losing streak. Think Roger Clemens, Bartolo Colon, or Pedro Martinez, to name a few. Stoppers give their team confidence, because the other players know that all they need is a minimum number of runs to win. One guy can control the outcome of a nine or 10-player game when the stopper is due to pitch.

Perhaps the most successful closer over the last 10 years has been the New York Yankee’s Mariano Rivera. For most of his career when he’s come into a game in the ninth inning with a one run lead, the game was over. Still, when a final inning thrower can’t close the deal, the loss goes to him, while the win goes to the other team.

Solid pitching wins championships and that means a team with a stable of starters who can go deep into the game and a “lights out” closer is almost impossible to beat.

HOCKEY:

Check out a goaltender’s save percentage and average goals allowed per game and you’ll get a good idea of a team’s chances of winning. Of course in order to be successful, a goalie needs some heads-up defensemen. But if a tender has allowed a low number of goals in the net and saved a high percentage of shots, chances are his ability to step up in pressure situations has been the key. If a goalie notches a ninety-percent save rate and 1.9 goals against, then that’s someone you can bet on.

The other thing about a great net minder is if his team knows he’s going to keep them in the game, they will gain confidence and believe that they can win. Great goaltending also frustrates opponents, making them press harder and taking them out of their game.

The second position, and this one creates a new dynamic in the offensive zone, is the center. Centers need to be able to win face-offs, lead the transition quickly from defense to offense, and create scoring opportunities by both shooting and passing. In hockey, passing and getting an assist is as important as scoring a goal (there’s a reason a player gets a point for either an assist or a goal—they’re both essential to winning).

Center Wayne Gretzky—the Great One—ended his amazing career with 894 goals and 1,963 assists—about a 1 to 2 ratio. When evaluating centers look for that goal to assist relationship; it says the team has a real playmaker that can create game winning situations in numerous ways.

FOOTBALL:

Football is a complex game of strategy, patterns, planning, and improvisation. In baseball everyone comes in contact with the ball. It’s the same for basketball, and in hockey all players manipulate the puck.

Football’s a whole other game. There’s an entire group of players on the gridiron that rarely touch the ball; in fact if they do come in contact with it, chances are something has gone wrong. The one position that always has contact with the football is quarterback.

The QB is typically the playmaker. He must be able to comprehend a changing situation, analyze it, and react to it. In the 2006 playoffs, Peyton Manning had a difficult time adjusting to surprises created by the Pittsburgh Steelers, taking him out of his game. Quarterbacks who have a reputation for staying calm under pressure include New England’s Tom Brady and Pittsburgh’s Ben Roethlisberger, while Dallas signal caller Drew Bledsoe’s gaffs have actually inspired the term “a Bledsoe moment.” A Bledsoe Moment occurs when pressure is at its greatest and the QB has a chance to win the game, only to fumble, throw an interception, or get sacked.

The other player who often has the game in his hands, or rather on the tip of his toe, is the field goal kicker. The Colts’ Mike Vanderjagt missed a game tying kick against Pittsburgh in the 2006 playoff game, which Indianapolis lost. Former Patriot and now Colt, Adam Vinatieri is considered to be the ultimate big game, pressure kicker because of his numerous last moment playoff field goals that have won games.

Ironically, field goal kickers probably have more single moment pressure on them than quarterbacks. Consider the fact that when a kicker comes out on the field, they have usually been put in a position by the offense to score. It’s expected that they will score. If they miss, they’ve lost an opportunity. If a quarterback throws an incompletion on second down, he’s got another chance to make good; if a kicker shanks his field goal, there’s no second chance.

To be a high-pressure kicker, the player does not have to be a great athlete, but he does need to be an accurate kicker with a strong leg. The other requirement is an ability to focus and perform under extreme stress. In fact, the player really has to relish being in that situation.

Kickers usually either possess or don’t possess this ability. This quality links kickers with goaltenders and closers. In each of their individual sports, these players are considered to be a unique breed—able to be completely calm while performing at optimum levels under unrelenting stress.

Next time you’re comparing teams, especially in playoff and tournament situations, look closely at the specific positions that we’ve highlighted. More often than not the performance of these players will be the difference between victory and defeat.

Tweet! The referee blows his whistle, temporarily stopping the soccer game. He then extends his arm at a 45-degree angle towards one of the corners of the field, on the half that the visiting team is defending. With less than 15 seconds in the game and with the score 0 to 1, this is the home team’s last chance to tie up the game. The corner kick kicker places the ball on the ground, and then retreats several steps. He raises his hand, darts toward the ball, and then kicks it into the air. Two opposing players leap up to head the ball, but both miss it as it swoops past them. With seconds ticking away, the ball bounces shortly off the ground. A home team player, facing away from the goal, leans his back backwards as he thrusts one of his feet upwards. He connects with the ball, executing a textbook bicycle kick. The ball shoots towards the upper corner of the goal, with the goalie extending his entire body towards that corner to catch the ball. Half an hour later, the hero of the game uses a webcam powered by CCTV DVR software to chat with loyal fans.

The 411 on CCTV DVR

A CCTV DVR refers to a Closed Captioned TV digital video recorder. The “closed captioned” aspect refers to the transferring of an image to a definite, limited quantity of monitors. This differs from broadcast television, which is used to publicly televise sporting events. On the other hand, digital systems record and send data by using thousands of tiny signals. This contrasts with analogue technology, which includes measuring, storing, or restoring an unlimited amount of data using physical values, such as voltage. CCTV has several applications. It is used in home security systems, traffic monitoring, surveillance, industrial activities that are too dangerous for humans, and maintaining safety in the operation of machines. CCTV DVR software is needed to make it easier and more convenient to operate your system.

Eye on Sports

CCTV DVR software offers several applications in the world of sports. Live sporting events can be broadcast to specific viewers on the Internet. For example, local games are sometimes not shown on free or cable TV. In that case, one can enjoy every pitch, pass, or shot which CCTV DVRs provide. In addition, these tools can be used to ensure the safety of players and fans in stadiums and arenas. Whether this involves players entering a stadium or players entering the field, CCTV DVRs with their CCTV DVR software can help keep everyone safe. Lastly, CCTV DVRs can be used as webcams to allow professional players to talk about sports with a private audience.

CCVTV DVR software is very simple to access. Various types of software are available for various types of CCTV systems. Regardless of what type of sport your system of digital video recorders is for – be it basketball, baseball, hockey, or soccer, you will need CCTV DVR software. Similarly, regardless of the function of your system – whether it is for privately broadcasting games or conducting surveillance on areas where the games are played – you cannot do away with CCTV DVR software.

Digital video recorders for closed captioned TV have become as much a part of sports as Babe Ruth, Joe Namath, or Wayne Gretzky. CCTV DVR software is as vital for those systems as a ball is for basketball.

Tiger Woods: The Best In Golf

Tiger Woods: The Best In Golf

There are many sports that people really enjoy watching: Football, basketball, baseball, hockey, soccer, etc. Yet many of these people don’t like to watch golf, because they say that it lacks the action and excitement that other sports do. Despite people feeling this way, there is one awesome golfer who really stands out and makes golf more interesting. This person is Tiger Woods. Fans claim that Tiger Woods is the absolute best player that there ever was. He has won many times during his career. Many people ask Tiger Woods who inspired him to play golf and he tells them that his dad inspired him. There was a game that he had played, yet didn’t do so well. His dad was there with him and told Tiger to keep his head up, and that wasn’t the last time he would lose a match. His dad was a major support system for Tiger Woods, which is why it was so devastating for him when his father died. It was difficult for Tiger to get motivated enough to play for a while, but when he finally did, during a tournament, he told the media that the particular game that he was playing was for his dad. And he proceeded to win yet another time.

Tiger Woods may not realize it, but many people play golf and look up to him as a role model. They practice playing the game as they strive to be as good as Tiger Woods is. This probably makes Tiger Woods feel good, too, knowing that they are young people out there who look up to him. He knows what it’s like to be inspired by someone special, so if he can inspire others, then that’s probably okay with it.

Tiger Woods golfs with such grace and finesse, and many other golfers just don’t have the same grace. It’s like he was born to play golf, which he probably was, since he plays it so well. I’m sure that all Tiger Woods fans agree. Maybe Tiger Woods can teach his children to play golf just as well as he does, and perhaps one of all of them will decide to become professional golfers, just like their dad. This way, Tiger Woods can inspire his children, just like his dad did for him.
